Print Scale & Ruler Calibration Calculator

Measure a test print and calculate the print scaling percentage needed to reach its intended size.

Measure, calculate, then verify

Use a ruler to measure both axes of a test print made at a known scale.

Print settings

Enter the scale used for the measured test, not the scale you want to try next. If the test used an unknown automatic Fit setting, print a fresh reference at 100% first.

Intended and measured size

Use the same corresponding endpoints. Measurements can include ruler uncertainty; repeat them if the two axes disagree.

Scale to match width—Original width error: —
Scale to match height—Original height error: —
Suggested new print scale—
Predicted width × height—

Predicted remaining error: —. Positive means too large; negative means too small.

This assumes the same settings and a linear response to print scaling. Results are rounded for display. Print software may limit the accepted percentage or accept fewer decimal places. The tool cannot control your printer, correct unequal axis distortion with one percentage, or certify physical accuracy. Always print and measure another test.

Download a ruler test reference

The SVG contains horizontal and vertical lines with a known physical length. It is a reference drawing, not a ruler that is calibrated to your screen.

Open the SVG in an application that respects physical units. Choose Actual Size / 100% and disable Fit to page. Then measure between the centres of the endpoint ticks. The file has a 180 × 230 mm page; print dialogs may add their own scaling.

Use selected reference length sets both intended dimensions; your measured dimensions and current print percentage are kept.

Screen preview is scaled to fit. Measure the paper print.

How to correct a print that is too small

Start with a test print at a known percentage. Measure its width and height, enter the intended dimensions, and calculate each axis separately. If a 100 mm line printed at 100% measures 98 mm, the new scale is 100 × 100 ÷ 98 = approximately 102.04081633%.

Use this formula for either axis: new scale (%) = current scale (%) × intended size ÷ measured size. Use the same unit for intended and measured dimensions.

Why the width and height corrections may differ

If a 100 × 100 mm test measures 98 × 99 mm, the width needs about 102.04081633% while the height needs about 101.01010101%. One uniform percentage cannot make both exact. Check the measurement, paper, print application and printer settings before proceeding.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calibrate my printer automatically?

No. It calculates a suggested percentage from your measurements. Apply the setting yourself and print another test to verify the result.

Is 4 inches the same as 100 mm?

No. Four inches is exactly 101.6 mm. Choose the matching reference and enter its intended length.

Can I fix an image stretched differently on each axis?

A single uniform print percentage cannot fix unequal axis ratios. This tool shows separate corrections and predicts the other axis when you select one correction.

Why did the downloaded SVG print at the wrong size?

The application or print dialog may apply Fit to page, margins or another scale. Use a program that respects SVG physical units, print at Actual Size / 100%, and verify the paper result with a ruler.

Are my measurements uploaded?

No. Calculations and reference generation run in your browser.
