One workspace for everyday writing
Check an assignment length, prepare a product description, rehearse a speech or tidy copied notes. Select a passage for its own word and character counts, then use a custom limit to keep your draft within a brief.
Count the characters people see
A visible character can contain several underlying Unicode code points. This tool uses grapheme clusters for its main character count, while also showing technical counts when a form or system uses a different limit. The language setting helps the browser find word boundaries in text that does not use spaces between every word.
Clean with control
Keep sentence structure with line-edge trimming, collapse repeated spaces, remove duplicate lines or sort a list. Undo restores the previous text in the current session. Find and replace treats your search literally, including symbols such as asterisks and brackets.
Frequently asked questions
How are words and characters counted?
Words use your browser’s language-aware word segmentation. Characters are visible grapheme clusters, so a family emoji or an accented letter can count as one character. Whitespace-free characters exclude spaces, tabs and line breaks. Unicode code points, UTF-16 units and UTF-8 bytes are also shown separately.
Will the word count match Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Not always. Apps use different word-boundary rules and include different document parts. Hyphenated terms, punctuation, abbreviations and languages without spaces can produce different counts. Use the required destination app if a school, publisher or form demands its exact count.
Can I count Malayalam, Arabic, Hindi and other languages?
Yes. Choose the closest supported language. Text is processed with the browser’s language-aware segmentation, including Malayalam, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and others. Results can vary slightly between browser versions.
How are paragraphs, sentences and reading times calculated?
A paragraph is a non-empty block separated by a blank line or Unicode paragraph separator. Lines are explicit line breaks, not wrapped lines on screen. Sentence boundaries are estimated by the browser. Reading and speaking times divide the word count by the speeds you choose; they are estimates, especially across different languages.
Are my text and files uploaded or saved?
The tool processes text in your browser and does not upload it or automatically save it. Save draft explicitly stores one draft in this browser profile; load or delete it from Keep a draft. Download a TXT copy for a separate backup. Keyword CSV and JSON reports include words from your text; the statistics TXT report contains counts only.
Can I clean text without losing the original?
Each text action can be undone, including case changes, whitespace cleanup, duplicate-line removal, sorting and literal find-and-replace. Undo history keeps up to 30 steps in the current page session and is cleared when you leave.
What does keyword share mean?
For one-word analysis, occurrences are divided by all counted words. For two- and three-word phrases, occurrences are divided by all eligible consecutive phrase positions; punctuation and line breaks prevent phrases from joining across boundaries. Hiding common English words filters the displayed rows without changing that denominator. There is no universal ideal keyword percentage for SEO.
Which files and text sizes can I use?
Open UTF-8 TXT, Markdown or CSV files of 1 MB or less, with up to 200,000 UTF-16 text units. Markup and CSV are treated as plain text, not converted documents. Current browsers with Intl.Segmenter are required. If background workers cannot load, texts of 30,000 units or fewer can still be analysed.
